She's a dedicated human rights advocate, and has inspired people across the globe to better their lives and live out their dreams. But perhaps there is no greater influence than leading by example.

Last year OPRAH WINFREY did just that, living out one of her wildest dreams by coordinating a spectacular weekend event to honor African American women who have paved the way for others.

Now, as the one-year anniversary approaches, Oprah's "Legends" weekend will be the subject of an ABC television special on Monday, May 15th.

"The most exciting thing for me was that I had to chance to honor all these women," she tells our CHRISHAUNDA LEE at Thursday night's party to celebrate the special. "And the spirit of that I want to spread across the nation and the world, is for people to do that to people in their own lives."

Oprah stays down-to-earth when it comes to her own legendary status. "I don't feel anything about that," she says. "I feel that everybody has to put their best effort, their best energy forward all the time, and however that is received is how it's received."

JOHN TRAVOLTA, KELLY PRESTON, DIANE SAWYER, TOM CRUISE, KATIE HOLMES, USHER, MARIAH CAREY, ASHANTI, HALLE BERRY, SPIKE LEE, MARY J. BLIGE, ALICIA KEYS and MISSY ELLIOTT are just some of Oprah's celebrity friends who took part in her "Legends" weekend.

JANET JACKSON arrived last night showing off her newly svelte figure in a vintage ensemble while TYRA BANKS, who was a guest at last year's ball and attended last night's party as well, tells ET the "Legends" weekend was like no other.

"When I was there, I was like, 'This doesn't feel real,'" she says. "It was only a weekend and I'm like, 'Gosh, I wish it could be a year, I wish we could like, live here.'"

As part of the special, Oprah shows her personal videos from the three-day, once-in-a-lifetime celebration honoring 25 legendary women in the fields of art, entertainment and civil rights.

The 25 legendary women celebrated include ROBERTA FLACK, ARETHA FRANKLIN, LENA HORNE, PATTI LaBELLE, GLADYS KNIGHT, DIONNE WARWICK, CHAKA KHAN, DIANA ROSS, TINA TURNER and CICELY TYSON, along with ROSA PARKS and CORETTA SCOTT KING, both of whom have passed away since the event.

"These women, who have been meaningful to so many of us over the years, are legends who have been magnificent in their pioneering and advancing of African American women. It is because of their steps that our journey has no boundaries," said Oprah.

The "Legends" weekend celebration kicked off with a private luncheon at Oprah's Montecito home. The following night was an extravagant, glamorous black-and-white gala held at the Bacara Resort and Spa in Santa Barbara, California. The event came to a close on Sunday with a gospel brunch, which included spontaneous performances by honorees Patti, Gladys, Dionne and Chaka!

In the one-hour special, Oprah shares her memories, candid celebrity interviews and intimate behind-the-scenes moments from the event, for which she spent a year planning.

Oprah says that the weekend was everything she wanted it to be. "I would love to do it again," she says. "But there's no reason to do it again because I did it, baby!"
